Students and Graduates - Jobs and Careers

How to get the job and step onto the career ladder

To progress in this world you need to find the right job, the best career

To boost your chances of being successful when applying for jobs, your CV Resume

needs to be more than good - it has to be exceptional

A good starting point is to write an interview winning CV that really sells your

qualifications, skills and experience - whether at university , in the workplace or other areas of your life

Your CV has to meet the changing expectations of employers - and illustrate the skill sets they value and need if they are to succeed and sustain their position in the marketplace

As future competition is driven by innovation and creativity, most organisations are facing many challenges

Consequently, employers need students with the skills to meet those challenges, and are only interested in candidates who can convincingly demonstrate ....

  • drive
  • initiative
  • enthusiasm
  • innovativeness
  • communication
  • interpersonal 'team working'
  • a 'can do' problem solving approach
  • and the ability to think 'out of the box'

How can you get the right message across?

Content

The reviewers of your CV Resume will be interested  in your college/university education.  It is best, therefore, to include details of your certificates, diploma or degree – including final year modules, grades, projects and, if applicable, dissertation.

Include any prizes, awards, and positions of responsibility as these create a great impression.

If you have had any work experience, whether paid or voluntary, then your CV Resume offers the perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate the skills you have developed.  Don´t just list the responsibilities you have undertaken.  Employers are interested in initiatives that you may have introduced or any significant activities you have undertaken.  This information will demonstrate the strengths you have to offer and will differentiate you from other candidates.

Include and rate any foreign language skills you may have in terms of either basic, competent or fluent.

Ideally, illustrate not only what you have achieved academically and during your work experiences, but also notable activities in your personal life as these provide an interesting insight into your personality.

Recruiter's can be sceptical - the CVs and resumes that start off with grandiose self-congratulatory claims fail to impress as they've heard it all before from other student and graduate job seekers many, many times.

As former recruiters, one of the most important pieces of advice we can offer is to think about what you will be taking to the party!  Your mindset should be `what can I do for the company?´ rather than `aren’t I brilliant?´

It is important to integrate as many skill sets into your CV Resume as possible; however, to gain credibility, your CV Resume should substantiate and include factual evidence of any claims you make

Language

Your writing should be explicitly clear, yet succinct - reviewers of CVs and Resumes do not have time for a life-story!

The perfect CV Resume will avoid meaningless clichés, slang and business-speak, and is specific and clear - any sort of ambiguity is a definite no-no

There are a variety of techniques that need to be employed in design terms to hold the reader's interest in your resume CV

Presentation

In addition to the above 'soft' skills, your CV (Curriculum Vitae) should be  ...  Distinctive    ....    visually appealing at first glance to pass the first screening process.  To achieve this, the CV's presentation should be smart, sleek and professional - so keep the style simple with plenty of white space - avoiding clutter!
